What is Granite?
If you’re looking at installing a granite countertop, you may want to know what granite is and why it makes such a gorgeous surface for counters.
Granite is a natural stone that can be found around the world. It is millions of years old and was formed by Earth’s molten core being pushed towards the surface and cooled simultaneously.
All of this occurs under intense pressure which makes it almost as hard as a diamond!
Granite is then exposed to the surface via seismic activity which means it’s especially prevalent in mountainous areas.
So how does granite come in so many colors? Well, on its way to the surface, the molten lava collects various minerals, which leads to a unique and variegated stone. Granite is known to contain quartz, feldspar, biotite, amphibole, muscovite, and other materials. Each of these contribute unique colors and patterns to the granite.
Granite is always unique and no two slabs are identical, which makes it a character piece for your home.
Why Use Granite for Countertops?
Although beauty would be an acceptable answer in itself, granite has other benefits as well. It is known to be an excellent building material and has been used in the construction of buildings, sidewalks, and statues!
Granite is comparable in hardness to diamonds, making it extremely durable. This is perfect for countertops which see an immense amount of wear and tear.
Granite can withstand knife blades, hot plates, and spills with ease, which makes it perfect for kitchens. It also is unaffected by bleach spills, hot tools, makeup spills, and detergents, making it also suitable for bathrooms and laundry rooms.
As for color options, we offer over 500 at Designer Surfaces Unlimited.
We have pieces with tight patterns as well as loose, flowing pieces. No matter what, you’re guaranteed to find a piece that fits perfectly with your home’s aesthetic.
We even have a color simulator to help you visualize pieces in your very own home!
What Is the Process of Installing Granite Countertops?
Once you’ve decided that you want granite countertops in your home, how long does it take and what is the process like?
The first step is to choose what granite you want. With over 500 color combinations, this task is more difficult than you might think.
Once you have your granite selected, we schedule a visit to your home to template the piece. This process involves using either cardboard materials or our laser templating system to create a pattern for your piece.
During this time, we discuss and approve everything with you including seam location, overhangs, and radius corners. You always get final approval.
After templating is done, you have some wait time. We order your piece of granite and then fit it to the template we created. During this phase, we encourage you to come to our showroom by appointment to approve and view the slabs of granite that will be used for your project.
Once your piece is completed, we schedule a day with you for installation. We work in four-hour time blocks for your convenience. When your piece is installed, we seal it and then it’s ready for use!
The entire process can take several weeks due to shipping, design, and development so we encourage you to plan ahead for this process.
